Highway 1 in Californië is gesloten

CALIFORNIA SCENIC HIGHWAY 1 BETWEEN MONTEREY/CAMEL AND SAN SIMEON CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC TILL FURTHER NOTICE:

The section of California Scenic Highway 1 between Carmel and Ragged Point is fully closed to through traffic.   If traveling from the South (northbound): The road is closed at Ragged Point (located 15 miles north of San Simeon). If traveling from the North (southbound), the road is closed at Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge (11 miles South of Carmel).   This closure means that it is not possible to make the complete road-trip through Big Sur along California’s Scenic Highway 1.

The road closure is due to massive mudslides and irreparable structural damage to the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge resulting from record-breaking winter rain storms along the California coast. The bridge is beyond repair and must be replaced.   Road will remain closed in both directions at Pfeiffer Canyon until at least the end of August 2017 and some scenarios project it could be closed past the end of 2017.

Southbound Alternate Route From Monterey/Carmel:   Highway 68 from Monterey connects to US Highway 101 South at Salinas. Stay on Highway 101 through Paso Robles. At Paso Robles take California Highway 46 West to connect to California Highway 1 a few miles south of Cambria. NOTE: At Junction of Highway 46 and Highway 1, travelers can choose to turn South or take a side trip and drive approximately 20 miles North on Highway 1 to see the famous Elephant Seals and Piedras Blancas Lighthouse as well as San Simeon and Hearst Castle.

Northbound Alternate Route From San Simeon/Cambria: At junction of Highway 1 and Highway 46, turn eastbound on Highway 46 to Paso Robles. At Paso Robles travel northbound on Highway 101 until reaching Salinas and junction with Highway 68. Continue on Highway 68 to Monterey. NOTE: The section of Highway 1 continuing north from Monterey to San Francisco also offers spectacular scenic California coastline.
