Vijf redenen waarom St. Pete/Clearwater op de reis-bucketlist zou moeten staan

De regio St. Pete/Clearwater ligt aan de Golfkust van Florida en is via diverse directe vluchten gemakkelijk te bereiken voor reizigers uit Midden-Europa. Daarnaast zijn er meerdere vluchten beschikbaar via de grote U.S.-hubs zoals New York, Chicago, Boston of Washington. Na een makkelijke vlucht bereikt u de luchthaven van Tampa, vanwaar u in slechts 30 minuten in St. Pete/Clearwater bent, waar vakantiegangers veel meer kunnen beleven dan ze misschien denken.

  1. Stranden voor elk wat wils met gegarandeerd zon

Er is geen twijfel over mogelijk dat iedereen die voor een vakantie naar Florida vliegt, wil ontspannen met zand onder zijn voeten en uitzicht op de oceaan. St. Pete/Clearwater heeft meerdere mooie stranden te bieden: St. Pete Beach en Clearwater Beach zijn al meerdere keren uitgeroepen tot mooiste strand van de USA en stonden wereldwijd in de top 10. Wat echter vooral prettig is, is dat er in de regio stranden zijn voor elke smaak en dat bezoekers en lokale bewoners verspreid zijn over talloze stranden. Al meer dan 50 jaar heeft de stad St. Pete het wereldrecord voor de meeste zon-dagen zonder onderbreking, met 768 dagen op rij.

  1. Allesbehalve slaperig: trendy St. Pete

Zo vind je in het EDGE District een groot aantal hippe restaurants, bars en clubs die op verschillende avonden live optredens verzorgen. Ook de LGBTQ+ scene is hier sterk vertegenwoordigd. Het Warehouse Arts District, aan de andere kant, is de thuisbasis van tal van lokale kunstenaars die hun studio’s hebben geopend in het voormalige industriële district. Van pottenbakkerijen tot galerijen tot glasblazerijen, kunstliefhebbers en creatievelingen kunnen het hier allemaal vinden. Je mag ook de kleurrijke straatkunstscène in het centrum van St. Pete niet missen. Talrijke muurschilderingen, zogenaamde “urban murals”, verfraaien de straten van het stadscentrum en creëren een indrukwekkende artistieke diversiteit.

  1. Rustige en actievolle activiteiten

Het lokale klimaat nodigt u uit om de natuur van de regio te verkennen. De mogelijkheden zijn bijna eindeloos: St. Pete/Clearwater lokt bijvoorbeeld natuurlijk met verschillende watersportactiviteiten, zoals kajakken op Weedon Island Preserve of paddleboarden rond Caladesi Island. Wie liever over land reist, kan de regio ook per fiets ontdekken, bijvoorbeeld bij Fort de Soto of langs de Pinellas Trail.

  1. Fastfood? Nee bedankt!

Wie denkt dat de gastronomische scene in St. Pete/Clearwater zich beperkt tot steak en hamburgers, zal aangenaam verrast zijn. De regio maakt indruk met een gevarieerd culinair aanbod met een focus op lokale en individuele concepten. De gebruikelijke restaurantketens zijn duidelijk in de minderheid in St. Pete/Clearwater en zijn ook niet populair bij de lokale bevolking.

  1. Indrukwekkende culturele scene

Cultuurliefhebbers kunnen zich ook verheugen op veel afwisseling in St. Pete/Clearwater. De regio verrast met verschillende spannende musea en kunsttentoonstellingen. Een van de bekendste klassiekers in St. Pete is het Dalí Museum, een bekende collectie van de beroemde surrealist buiten Europa. Het Museum of Fine Arts daarentegen biedt 20.000 kunstwerken over een periode van 5.000 jaar. Er zijn werken te zien van Claude Monet en van Auguste Rodin, aan wie vanaf november een aparte tentoonstelling is gewijd: True Nature: Rodin and the Age of Impressionism.

Five reasons why St. Pete/Clearwater should be on the travel bucket list

The St. Pete/Clearwater region is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is easy to reach for travelers from Central Europe: Eurowings Discover and Edelweiss Air offer nonstop flights from Frankfurt respectively Zurich to Tampa. In addition, there are multiple flights available via the large U.S.-hubs like New York, Chicago, Boston or Washington. After an uncomplicated flight, you reach Tampa Airport, from where you can be in St. Pete/Clearwater in just 30 minutes, where holidaymakers can experience much more than they might think.

1. Beaches for every taste with sun guaranteed

There’s no question that anyone who flies to Florida for a holiday wants to relax with sand under their feet and a view of the ocean. St. Pete/Clearwater has several beautiful beaches to offer: St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach have already been voted the most beautiful beach in the USA several times and were in the top 10 worldwide. What is particularly pleasant, however, is that there are beaches for every taste in the region and that visitors and locals are spread over numerous beaches. For over 50 years, the city of St. Pete has held the world record for the most sunny days without interruption, with 768 days in a row.

2. Anything but sleepy: trendy St. Pete

In the EDGE District, for example, you will find a large number of trendy restaurants, bars and clubs that offer live performances on various evenings. The LGBTQ+ scene is also strongly represented here. The Warehouse Arts District, on the other hand, is home to numerous local artists who have opened their studios in the former industrial district. From potteries to galleries to glass-blowing shops, art lovers and creatives can find it all here. You should also not miss the colorful street art scene throughout downtown St. Pete. Numerous murals, so-called “urban murals” embellish the streets of the city center and create an impressive artistic diversity.

3. Calm and action-packed activities

The local climate invites you to explore the nature of the region. The possibilities are almost endless: St. Pete/Clearwater, for example, naturally entices with various water sports activities, such as kayaking at Weedon Island Preserve or paddle boarding around Caladesi Island. Those who prefer to travel on land can also discover the region by bike, for example at Fort de Soto or along the Pinellas Trail.

4. Fast food? No thanks!

Anyone who thinks that the gastronomic scene in St. Pete/Clearwater is limited to steak and burgers will be pleasantly surprised. The region impresses with a diverse culinary portfolio with a focus on local and individual concepts. The usual chain restaurants are clearly in the minority in St. Pete/Clearwater and are not popular with the locals either.

5. Impressive cultural scene

Those interested in culture can also look forward to plenty of variety in St. Pete/Clearwater. The region surprises with various exciting museums and art exhibitions. One of the best-known classics in St. Pete is the Dalí Museum, a well-know collection of the famous surrealist outside Europe. The Museum of Fine Arts, on the other hand, offers 20,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years.
